At Nerd Jar, the planet is our most important stakeholder (right next to our customers, of course!), and we are working hard to achieve a fair and sustainable business model.
We defiantly believe that treating people and the planet with respect is more than just a moral obligation and actually results in more value for everyone – from cotton pickers to manufacturers to t-shirt wearers everywhere.
Powered by sustainable energy
According to the UN, energy is the biggest contributor to climate change, accounting for around 60% of global greenhouse gas emissions. To achieve the goals of SDG7 – Affordable & Clean Energy, businesses and individuals need to choose sustainable energy.
For these reasons, we opted to power our entire production facility with 100% renewable energy. Mostly this takes the form of wind or solar energy collected right here in The Netherlands. For the small amounts of gas we use to keep warm during the colder months, we offset our carbon consumption by planting trees with a reforestation partner.
Choosing sustainable energy alternatives not only helps us reduce the carbon footprint of our direct operations, but also those of all our customers who choose to print or embroider with us.
Eco-Friendly Materials, Inks & Threads
At Nerd Jar, we work solely with certified organic cotton and recycled polyester garments. We've vetted each brand and item of clothing to ensure it meets our (and your) expectations when it comes to sustainability.
Of course, while working with more sustainable materials like these is a big step in the right direction, we still have print and embroider on these garments. This can become a hidden source of plastic or reintroduce certain chemicals, for example. Fortunately, we address this in our production by using GOTS certified inks that also carry the Oeko-Tex Passport. Similarly, our embroidery threads are GOTS certified and Oeko-Tex certified recycled polyester.
Packaging is a huge source of plastic and pollution, and is especially problematic in the online retail and e-commerce industry.
We've partnered with a sustainable packaging manufacturer to ensure all of our packaging is 100% non-toxic and compostable.
We use biodegradable polybags to wrap individual order items. It completely dissolves in boiling water!
Orders are then shipped in compostable mailers. In case of returns, they can be resealed and reused. Otherwise, they can be traditionally composted – or alternatively filled with fresh soil and used for plant potting 🌱
Real-time print and embroidery
Commitment to technology is one of our core values – it's how we (proudly) put the "nerd" in Nerd Jar.
We believe good technology can help us deliver great experiences for our customers while also reducing waste in our operations.
One of the biggest examples of this is our machinery, software and automation technology. It enables us to make products in real-time, so we only print or embroider something after it's been ordered – no more waste!
It's also thanks to this technology that we don't require any minimum order quantities (MOQs). As a result, our customers can start making or selling custom textiles without the need to purchase anything up-front. Not only does that offer a lot of flexibility for you, as a customer, but it further ensures we only produce something that already has an owner waiting for it and won't go to waste!
We've partnered with PostNL and DHL for our shipping, both of whom have made sustainability a priority through company-wide sustainability goals in line with our values.
While our carriers continue working towards reducing the net carbon-footprint of their logistics networks – for example, by switching to electric vehicles – we continue to offset all carbon emissions generated in the shipping of our orders.
We donate 1% of our profits
As a social impact company, we believe in the power of business as a platform for change.
We are therefore committed to sharing our growth with organisations actively working to combat the many threats to our planet, and one of the most important ways we do this is through our membership with 1% for the Planet. Being a member means that, regardless of our own profit, we donate 1% of all our sales to environmental non-profit partners.
Today, this community includes over 2,000 businesses like us, a growing number of individual members, and thousands of non-profit partners operating across 60+ countries who recognise that the current level of environmental giving - only 3% of total philanthropy - is not enough to solve the most pressing issues facing our planet. But, with over $225 million donated by the community to date, we're working hard to change that.
Let's plant trees, together 🌲
We lose 3.5 billion trees every year. Trees absorb carbon from the atmosphere, provide habitat to 80% of terrestrial biodeiversity, are key ingredients in 25% of all medicines, and much more.
For all these reasons, we decided to partner with Trees for All to tie our business performance to global reforestation.
Trees for All is a Dutch registered non-profit leveraging nature based solutions to tackle climate change. Their projects in The Netherlands and abroad also foster greater biodiversity and better living conditions for local people.
Through this partnership we plant, on average, one tree for each order we receive.
