Sustainability & Social Responsibility

At Nerd Jar, the planet is our most important stakeholder (right next to our customers, of course!), and we are working hard to achieve a fair and sustainable business model.

We defiantly believe that treating people and the planet with respect is more than just a moral obligation and actually results in more value for everyone – from cotton pickers to manufacturers to t-shirt wearers everywhere.

Some say perfection is unattainable. We say...

"challenge accepted."

We donate 1% of our profits

As a social impact company, we believe in the power of business as a platform for change.

We are therefore committed to sharing our growth with organisations actively working to combat the myriad of threats to the planet, and one of the most important ways we do this is through our membership with 1% for the Planet.

In 2002, Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, founder of Blue Ribbon Flies, created 1% for the Planet and started a global movement with a mission to "bring dollars and doers together to accelerate smart environmental giving."

Today that movement includes over 2,000 businesses like us, a growing number of individual members, and thousands of non-profit partners operating across 60+ countries who recognise that the current level of environmental giving – only 3% of total philanthropy – is not enough to solve the most pressing issues facing our planet. However, with over $225 million donated to date, we're already making waves to change things.

We're proud to call ourselves a member of this incredible community and of our commitment to give at least 1% of our sales back to the environment (whether we're profitable or not).

Nature-Based Solutions (NBS)

Did you know there used to be about 6 trillion trees on Earth? Sadly, today only about half that many remain. Worse still, we continue to lose about 15 billion trees every year...

It's important to realise that our forests, grasslands and wetlands aren't just a source of beauty and natural wonder. They're also our best defence against the increasing levels of carbon in our atmosphere. Studies indicate that climate change solutions that help lock up carbon in the world’s forests, grasslands and wetlands could provide as much as one-third of the total emissions reductions needed by 2030 to meet the Paris Agreement targets. These types of solutions are known as Nature-Based Solutions (NBS).

While we're already using our funds to support a number of environmental non-profits, we've gone a step further and partnered directly with Trees for the Future. Through their Forest Garden Program, the organisation has developed a simple, replicable, and scalable solution that focuses not only on environmental but also socioeconomic issues.

Specifically, the 4-year program teaches farmers how to protect and bring nutrients back to the soil by planting thousands of trees. This way, the farmers take care of the trees and the trees take care of the farmers for years to come. How? Healthy soil means farms can produce more fruit and vegetables, which results in more income and greater access to food, even in the first year.

Operations & Machinery

We undertake a variety of initiatives to ensure our inward-facing activities are as strongly rooted in sustainability as our outward-facing activities.

To begin, we developed certain sustainability criteria to guide our procurement process and decision-making, especially when it comes to our warehouse and machinery. For example, our Direct-to-Garment (DTG) printing machines are Epson SureColor F3070s, which use inks certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and also carry the ECO PASSPORT by OEKO-TEX. Our office and warehouse also hold an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of A, the highest rating for energy efficiency.

Of course, some concessions unfortunately still have to be made, but we are continuously working to find or create new solutions and strive for true sustainability in our operations. For example, while the energy consumption / emissions resulting from our operations is relatively low, we have partnered with a carbon offsetting partner to accurately report on our carbon footprint and, where necessary, offset through other initiatives.

The packaging used to ship all orders is 100% plastic free and all excess and waste cardboard / paper is recycled.

Our paper mailing bags are manufactured to comply with FSC certification and are both compostable and degradable, making recycling super easy (so please don't send them to landfill! 🤓♻️)

Nerd Jar BV is committed to its environmental policies, as outlined above. We're always seeking ways to do more, so if you have any questions, feedback, or suggestions on how we could do more please feel free to get in touch – we'd love to hear from you 🌱
